I first came across Mike Kobal while surfing about looking for gear reviews on Vimeo. I watched many boring reviews, and then came to Mr. Kobal's review; it was quick, tight and to the point. I was impressed, I dug to his site, bonus, he did not have some tiresome, painfully boring flash site, like so, so many photographers. His site leads me to Soma Magazine (great magazine,) which led me to Polly Morgan and the world of twisted taxidermy, which is another tail.
I think it was at mikekobal.com that something happened to me. I became interested in photographing humans, something that I have avoided, yes, avoided. Try making a bowl of fruit look interesting, try to find the magic, the beauty in the ordinary day to day world, the world we take for granted. That is challenging but a face is easy. People are pathologically interested in other people.
Mike Kobal’s commercial photography has that urban edge that is appealing without seeming contrived, he is not afraid to blow it out or go gritty. However, the area where he really shines for me is his short, HDSLR pieces. Those are usually sidebars to his fashion shoots. These pieces are visually arresting, and sonically stimulating. They are not commercials and they are not short films, I call them Moving Pictures. So check him out, I think you will be as inspired by his work as I am.
